In my recent all-too-brief visit to Bourbon Country and Louisville, KY, I had time to do some things I wanted, but I have seen many more things I would like experience. Fortunately for me I live only about 40 miles away so you can go back and do that later. If ever fortunate enough to find in Bardstown, here are five activities or attractions that you should consider doing.
1. A visit to a distillery or two. Good, this is really the only true "must-do" in the country of the Bourbons. I only had time to visit Heaven Hill distillery more near downtown, but there are dozens of distilleries in minutes from Bardstown, including the famous Jim Beam and Maker's Mark distillery. Learn how bourbon is done, the history of Bourbon and its surroundings and sample the end product. What is not love.
2. The visit of the Old Talbott Tavern. I had lunch at this historic inn and tavern that is located squarely in the Courthouse Square. Currently works as a restaurant, hotel and bed & breakfast. It has a colorful past. Here There is a clip from their website:
The stone reminder of Bardstown beginnings still welcomes visitors to the downtown area heavy traffic. Since late 1700, the Old Talbott Tavern on Court Square has provided shelter, food and drink to travelers in Kentucky.
Talbott Tavern is said to be more Old diligence stop in western United States and westward expansion brought explorers from eastern Kentucky.
According to legend, the numbers directly of the history books for accommodation here during his travels as a young Abraham Lincoln and his family stayed here, Gen. George Rogers Clark, Daniel Boone, and exiled French King Louis Philippe and his entourage stayed here, including painting murals on the walls above. There are bullet holes marked in paint now faded and Jesse James is said to be responsible for them.
Riiiiight. Hey, it's possible. Jesse James mother lived in my home town of Brandenburg and I asleep in his room. She was not there at that time. 
But that's a story for another time.
Anyway, if you go to the Old Talbott Tavern, go the story because food is only average. There is nothing wrong with it, but definitely not do it on my blog Roadfood places to eat on the road.
O else - is said to be pursued. Maybe it's Jesse.
2. Walk the Courthouse Square and downtown. Bardstown is proud of its history, and rightly be. It is the second oldest city in Kentucky and has one of the largest collections of late 18th and early 19th-century buildings in the southern United States. There is even a recreation a border town right on the Courthouse Square. I like to read those little plates that make history in old buildings.
Opposite the Old Talbott Tavern is a pharmacy counter still has a real meal. If the noon crowd is an indication this would have been a much better choice for lunch but probably have had to wait until 3 or 4 pm to get a seat. Next time.
4. Kentucky Railway Museum. See a large number of engines of vintage cars and an era when trains ruled the west in the official railroad museum of Kentucky. Take a stroll through the scenic Rolling Fork River Valley on the train for dinner.
5. Abbey of Gethsemani. The center has displays and a video presentation about monastery life and as a gift shop with Gethsemani Farms products. The abbey, founded in 1848 by the Trappist Order of Cistercians, is home today to open the Trappist doors to spiritual seekers around the world. Pick up some handicrafts monk while you are there including the world famous cheese.
I wonder whether to make the beds. Get it? Monkbeds. HA!
There is much to do in and around Bardstown it's best just to make a weekend of it. There are several B & B contained in the official site that looks good and I saw at least two right at the downtown square. Who wants to come home after all the bourbon-making samples anyway.
