Natural gas is a cost environmentally clean, abundant and low-Canada produces fuel for motor vehicles. But is it a safe fuel? Everything fuel car can be dangerous if handled incorrectly. Fuels contain energy which must be released by combustion. Gasoline is a potentially dangerous fuel, but over time we learned to use it safely. The same is true of natural gas. Natural gas safely generates our electricity, heats our homes and cooks our meals. But, like gasoline, gas Natural must be understood and respected to be used safely.
Natural gas is a naturally occurring fuel which requires little treatment before use. Chemically it normally consists of over 90% methane with smaller amounts of ethane, propane, butane, carbon dioxide and other trace gases. The high methane content gives natural gas its high octane (120-130) and characteristics clean combustion, which allows the engine to high performance and low emissions. As with all fuel vehicles, natural gas can be used safely if simple procedures and common sense are followed. In fact, natural gas has safety advantages over gasoline and diesel: it is not toxic and has no potential for contamination of ground water or in the event of a release of fuel. An odorant is added to provide a characteristic odor and intentionally disagreeable that is easy to recognize.
The odor is detectable at the fifth gasa "lower flammable limit. Natural gas vehicles have an excellent safety record for two main reasons: the properties fuel itself and the integrity of the natural gas vehicle and its system of fuel delivery. Natural gas has a very limited range of flammability, it will not burn in concentrations below about five per cent or above 15% when mixed with air. Gasoline and diesel burn at much lower concentrations and ignite at lower temperatures. Even if it takes very little energy to ignite a flammable mixture of air and natural gas, gasoline or diesel, natural gas burns at a temperature slightly lower.

From the field of gas-engine vehicles, natural gas requires very little processing to make it usable as fuel. Gasoline and diesel must be processed from crude oil to major oil refineries and complex. After water vapor, sulfur and hydrocarbons Heavy are eliminated, the flow of natural gas by pipeline (the safest way to transport energy) directly to the service station where it is compressed employment. Alternatively, it may be liquefied at cryogenic temperatures on site or at a central facility and delivered by truck. Gasoline and diesel are delivered to filling stations by tanker trucks on the road. At a compressed natural gas fueling station gas is compressed before to be given to vehicles from 3000 to 3600 to pounds per square inch (psi). Stations can provide à "fill fast" for vehicles in minutes or a girl using a "slow" strategy, within hours of the night.
Although use of high storage pressures might appear dangerous, compression, storage and supply of natural gas vehicles meet stringent industry and safety standards of the government. Natural gas vehicles are designed and constructed to be safe both in normal conditions and in accidents. NGV New are subjected to crash tests as other vehicles. The fuel systems for natural gas vehicles must meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards 303 and 304. Natural gas cylinders are much thicker and stronger than gasoline or diesel tanks. Industry standards require them to withstand 11,250 fill cycles, and endure far beyond normal environmental and damage risks service.
Although there are about 85,000 natural gas vehicles now operating in the United States, there was no Fuel Tank break in over two years. In Italy, with more than 300,000 natural gas vehicles in operation, there was a break in the fuel tank during last three years.
In conclusion, technical data, appropriate safety rules and years of experience show the natural gas vehicles to be as safe as or safer than, vehicles using conventional fuels.
